Heidi specializes in school law. She provides guidance on education-related legal topics such as FERPA, student data privacy, appropriate use of social media for teachers, first amendment rights for teachers and students, and due process rights for teachers and students. She also advises clients on employment matters, policy drafting, and special education laws and regulations. Prior to her current practice, Heidi was worked at the Utah State Office of Education as a School Law and an Investigator/Prosecutor for the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission.
Heidi has a Level 3 Teaching License and began her career as a junior high history teacher in Davis District. She then attended BYU Law School, where she graduated magnum cum laude in 2005.
In addition to providing legal services to LEAs, Heidi spends a great deal of time during the legislative session tracking legislation, working with legislators to draft education bills, and training clients on applicable new laws at the conclusion of the session. Heidi also serves as the vice-chair of the Children’s Justice Center State Advisory Board, sits on the State Student Policy User’s Group for Data Privacy Protection, and is vice chair of the Education Section of Utah State Bar. She also teaches as an adjunct professor in the USU Education Leadership program.
